| Philmont National Scout
Training Center |
| The
Philmont Training Center is
nestled in the foothills of
the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains of northeastern
New Mexico near Cimarron.
Rich in history and natural
beauty, this area offers
exciting educational
experiences for the entire
family. PTC has served as
the National Training Center
for the Boy Scouts of
America since 1950. A
variety of weeklong
conferences will be
conducted for unit,
district, and council
volunteers and
professionals. Each
conference features the
latest tools, audiovisuals,
and techniques led by a
faculty of experienced
Scouters. The conference
schedule permits ample time
for family activities, day
hiking, and recreation. Our
summer staff will lead
hiking, tours, handicrafts,
and outdoor activities. A
weeklong backcountry
Mountain Trek for older Boy
Scout & Venture-age youth is
also offered. (No Mountain
Trek weeks 1 and 12). In
order to attend the PTC you
must be nominated by the
Cimarron Council. please

| Boy Scout Roundtable
Commissioner and Staff Training |
Roundtable training for the district
Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner and
Roundtable staff. Training can be
completed in three hours covering topics
such as role of the commissioner, making
displays, how to do demonstrations, and
planning, through annual, quarterly, and
monthly meetings. Contact our Council
Commissioner,
Bill
Warde to find out the next time we
are conducting this course.

| Chartered Organization
Representative Training |
A very important training course,
recently updated for your unit's
Chartered Organizational
Representative. This is an important
position every unit must have. We will
cover their responsibilities at the
Council and District level as official
voting members as well as how they can
work to build a stronger relationship
between the unit and the church,
organization, or business that charters
("sponsors") the unit. This training is
offered at the District level. The
training session lasts about 90
minutes. A short annual meeting of the
District Committee follows. Both the
101 & Pawnee Bill District regularly
conduct this training each fall.

| Climbing Tower Certification
Training |
Cimarron Council has two wonderful
Climbing Tower facilities at Will Rogers
Scout Reservation and Williams Scout
Reservation but to use them you must
participate in a 2 1/2 day training
program led by a National Camp School
certified instructor. Usually offered
once a year in October. Jim Keith, our
council Climbing Committee Chairman
provides additional details on the
Cimarron Climbers website.

| Climb on Safely |
This course, usually offered at
Roundtables at least once a year as well
as Will Rogers Summer Camp by our
National Camp School certified climbing
director is like Safe Swim Defense for
scout units that want to conduct
Climbing activities. You will learn
about B.S.A.'s Safety principles in this
60 minute session. Any leader who goes
through BSA Climbing Instructor Training
also receives this certification.

| Commissioner Basic Training |
Information every commissioner needs to
be a successful. Presented by the
district or council. This six hour
training covers unit visits, problem
solving, and charter renewal. Contact
your District Commissioner to see when
the next local course will be offered.

| Commissioner Orientation |
Presented in a meeting or by personal
coaching to new commissioners within two
weeks of being recruited by the district
commissioner or assistant district
commissioner. Covers general information
on working with units to help them
succeed. Includes the video "The Unit
Commissioner's Orientation - Helping
Units Succeed" Contact your District
Commissioner to see when the next local
course will be offered.

| Cub Scout Leader Specific
Training (5 types) |
Job specific information for all Cub
Scout leaders and their assistants.
Training lasts approximately three
hours. Separate sessions for:

This training is presented by
districts or by Pack Trainers working
with the district training staff.
Topics include organization, planning
meetings and evaluating them, job
descriptions and advancement.

| Cub Scout Roundtable
Commissioner and Staff Training |
Roundtable training for the district Cub
Scout Roundtable Commissioner and
Roundtable staff. Training can be
completed in three hours covering topics
such as promotion, importance of games
and songs, and planning meetings.
Presented by the council.

| Cub Scout Orientation
(for parents of Cub Scouts) |
"Fast Start" for parents. A 10 minute
video tape is available for Cub
Scouting. The tape may be viewed at home
by families or presented at a pack
meeting, den parents meeting or pack
parents meeting. Boy Scout troops
usually hold parent meetings that serve
as orientation. Each gives basic
information on Scouting programs, aims
and methods. The new Cimarron Council
join Cub Scout DVD's that were given to
all first graders in the fall of 2005
had this Orientation included on the
disc.

| Den Chief Training |
All Boy Scouts serving as a den chief
should attend this five hour training.
Cubmasters and den leaders working with
den chiefs may also attend to understand
how to use a den chief most effectively.
Time is spent teaching how to get along
with Cub Scout and Webelos Scout as well
as how to lead den activities such as
games, songs, and contests. This course
is needed for a Den Chief to earn the
Den Chief Service Award.

| District Committee Training
Workshop |
A four hour training presented by the
district and council for members of the
district committee. Topics include the
four functions of district operation and
tasks of each specific committee.

| Fast Start (all levels) |
The "How-to" training for new leaders in
Scouting. Available on-line or video for
leaders in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting,
Varsity, and Venturing. Each training
has short special interest topics that
may be viewed separately. Fast start
gives information on how to hold first
meetings and programs. All Cub Scout
Packs have been given a copy of all five
Cub Fast Start videos on DVD during the
2005 Fall Program Kickoff - See your New
Den Leader Kits for the DVD. All of the
Fast Start videos are also available at
the Enid Council Service Center for free
checkout. See Greg Boggs, our Scout
Shop Manager in Enid OK to sign out a
copy.

| Health and Safety Training,
B.S.A. |
This training offers information for
safe scouting beyond the policies
contained within the Guide to Safe
Scouting. Includes information of Sweet
16 of Scout Safety. Aquatics program and
climbing program safety is covered. The
training is especially important to
those leaders involved in leading high
adventure program but has information
useful for all Scouting programs. This
one to two hour training is offered by
districts and the council. This course
will be offered each week of Will Rogers
Summer Camp in 2006 and is also offered
at most District Roundtables about once
a year.

| Introduction to Outdoor Leader
Skills |
Providing leaders in Cub Scouting,
Boy Scouting, Varsity, and Venturing
with basic outdoor skills information.
Given over one to two and a half days,
it may include an overnight camping
experience. Course emphasizes skills and
may be accelerated by demonstrating
mastery of specific skills. Skills
taught are based on those found in The
Boy Scout Handbook with emphasis on
skills that build confidence and
competence in leaders conducting outdoor
experiences. Subjects covered include:
flag etiquette, plant identification,
packing and hiking techniques, map and
compass, cooking, and first aid.
Offered at the Sundance Training Center
at least twice a year.

| Leave No Trace Training |
Organized or presented by the Unit
Training Coordinator, district, or
council. Concepts can be presented over
a series of weeks or months in 15 to 30
minute segments. Suggested activities
take 45-75 minutes. This training covers
how to camp in ways that will make the
least impact on the environment. Great
training for any leader or youth
interested in best methods for camping
in wilderness areas. The course will
also be offered each week at Will Rogers
Summer Camp.

| Lifeguard B.S.A. Training |
This course is open to both adults &
youth members of the B.S.A. and is
offered at Will Rogers Summer Camp. You
can become a certified Lifeguard in this
very intensive week long course. The
certification is good for three years
and then must be recertified in a one
day update class.

| Merit Badge Counselor Training |
Offered by our Council Advancement
Chairman, this course assists our
registered Merit Badge Counselors in the
Advancement process. An emphasis on
Youth Protection Training is also a part
of the program. Contact our Council
Advancement Chairman, Dr. Jack Dillwith,
to find out when the next course will
be.

| New Leader Essentials |
An introductory training for all new or
untrained leaders that highlights the
values, aims, history, funding, and
methods of Scouting. It addresses how
these aims and methods are reached in
age appropriate activities in Cub
Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity
Scouting, and Venturing. The ninety
minute session is taken only once.
Facilitated by unit training
coordinators, districts, and the
council.

| NAYLE - National Advanced Youth
Leader Experience |
The NAYLE is the brand new training
experiences for youth leaders. It is
conducted for older Scouts.
Qualifications are: First Class rank or
higher, 14 years of age by opening day
of course, but not yet 18. The Cimarron
Council is seeking a candidate to take
this training in the summer of 2006 as
we plan to launch a new Youth Leadership
Training program in the fall of 2006 for
our council and need several youth to
undertake this training. A youth
candidate taking this training must have
a willingness to become a youth trainer
in the Cimarron Council, proficiency in
Scouting skills, and meets Philmont's
Level A physical requirements. Requires
a valid, signed, Philmont Level A
Medical Record.

| Introduction to Outdoor Skills
for Webelos Leaders |
This one or two day training for Webelos
den leaders is held in an outdoor
setting. The hands-on skills taught are
those needed to work with Webelos
Scouts. Emphasis is on information
needed to teach the outdoor related
activity badges. A new syllabus for this
course came out in August of 2005.

| Passport to High Adventure |
This hour long course, accompanied by
the Passport to High Adventure book is a
great way to learn about how to begin a
High Adventure program in your Troop,
Crew, or Varsity Team. You will
discover all of Scouting's great High
Adventure Bases, and how to prepare your
group for a High Adventure experience.

| Powderhorn |
This is a major two full weekend (or 7
day course) in being able to introduce
your Troop, Team, or Crew into different
High Adventure opportunities. We
usually offer this training at least
once a year somewhere in Oklahoma as
different councils put on the course.

| Roundtable |
Just what is this Scouting thing anyway?
Well, it's The Program! And you can
learn all about The Program at your
local District Roundtable, a monthly
meeting held by each district to cover
the highlights of the national plan for
Scouting, published in the magazine for
adult Scouting volunteers,
SCOUTING.
Some districts and troops follow the
national plan a little more closely than
others, but there's still plenty for
every unit adult leader to glean from
years of experience and connection to
your fellow Scouting leaders in your
community. We have Roundtables in
Stillwater, Enid, & Ponca City each
month of the school year & quarterly
Roundtables in Woodward. For exact

| Safe Swim Defense & Safety
Afloat |
These are two separate training sessions
that we offer at Will Rogers Scout
Reservation each summer and they are
sometimes offered at Roundtable. You
can also complete these courses on-line
(see top of this web page. Each session
lasts under an hour and gives leaders a
basic orientation of BSA Safety rules.
Safe Swim Defense certification is
required for at least one leader before
a unit goes on any Swimming activity.
Safety Afloat is a course that is
required before any type of boating,
tubing, or other water craft activity.

| Scoutmaster & Asst. Scoutmaster
Leader Specific Training |
A one day or three two and a half hour
training sessions for Scoutmasters and
their assistants. Presented by
districts, this training covers
advancement, patrol method, outdoor
program and program planning.
Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills is
also required to "Trained"
specification.

| Trek Safely |
Designed to help youth and adult leaders
plan and carry out a safe trekking
experience. The 40 minute session
presented by unit, district, or council
trainers with trek experience. Covers
seven points of Trek Safely, qualified
supervision and discipline and resources
for planning a trek. This course is
also offered at Will Rogers Scout
Reservation each week of summer camp and
is also included as a part of the annual
Ouachita Trek contingent.

| Troop Committee Challenge |
A Troop training coordinator can
facilitate this two and a half to three
hour training for the troop committee.
It is also offered by the District
Training Committees from time to time.
Committee learns who has responsibility
for various tasks and how to work
together within the group. Many
Cimarron Council units are setting up
this course. It is also a course that
can be taken on-line from the E-Learning
Center.

| Troop Youth Leader Training |
A one day or weekend training held by
the troop leadership for the youth
leaders of the troop. Planning and
conducting troop activities are
emphasized. A BRAND NEW Syllabus for
this course has just been released
(October 2005) and is now available at
the Enid Scout Shop.

| Trainer Development Conference |
An eight hour course for anyone in
Scouting doing any type of training.
Topics include why and how we train
leaders, planning courses, training
technology, methods, and pizzazz in
training. Includes hands on
activities. Presented by the
council.

| Varsity Specific Leader Training |
Training for Varsity coaches and
assistants covering fields of emphasis
for Varsity, organizing activities,
understanding teens, and advancement. As
Varsity Teams are established, the
Stillwater Stake Center of the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints will
be conducting this course.

| Venturing Specific Leader
Training |
This six hour training is for all
Venturing crew advisors, their
assistants, Venturing crew committee
chairs, and members of the committee.
Topics covered include understanding
youth, resources and program planning,
recognition, and how to do a Program
Capability Inventory. Presented by the
district.

| Venturing Leadership Skills
Course |
This course is designed to help teach
all youth leaders the attitudes and
skills that good leaders demonstrate.
The training is broken into four
categories: Vision, Communication,
Organization and Synergism. Although
Crew officers are thought to benefit
most, the Venturing Leadership Skills
Course was specifically designed to be
experienced by the entire crew and it is
important to note that the skills
learned will easily be applied
anywhere-school, sports, church groups,
etc. This training is very "hands-on",
with a lot of fun activities built in.

| Youth Protection |
Adults in Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting
should view the 65 minute video
available online, Adult Youth
Protection. Venturing crew advisors
should view Adult Youth Protection for
Venturing Leaders, a 22 minute video
available online. Covers types of abuse,
two deep leadership and reporting
requirements. There are also three
different age appropriate videos for
Scouting youth to view. VHS & DVD
copies of these videos are available for
free checkout from the Enid Service
