UNIT

RECHARTERING

Every December, all units (packs, troops, crews, posts) are required to renew their affiliation with Scouting. The BSA issues charters to community organizations to enable them to use the Scouting program under their own leadership as a service to their children, youth, and families. Re-chartering is the process of renewing the charter agreement between the BSA and the organization, and renewing the registration of youth and adult members.

Rechartering on time is critical. It is required for Journey to Excellence,  for units to continue registration without interruption, and to ensure Scouts are registered. It is critical for receiving rank advancement and other awards, and for insurance coverage.

A representative of each unit completes the paperwork for renewing a charter online. Through the process, chartered (sponsoring) organizations, youth member and adult leader information is updated as well as registration fees and Scout Life subscriptions are collected/paid.

For 2022, Recharter is done through Scoutbook.org and is initiated by the Unit Key 3.  The Unit Key 3 can also select another leader to complete the process.  If this is your first time to be involved with recharter, or if you need to brush up on how recharter is done, please read the Recharter Instructions below before continuing.

For assistance with your recharter, please contact your Unit Commissioner, District Executive or the Council Office.

Recharter Update

In August, BSA's National Council announced two important changes that affect this year's recharter.

  1. To ensure that BSA has the resources to fulfill the promise of Scouting, the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America has made the difficult but necessary decision to increase annual membership fees.  The new fees are effective for all units rechartering in December 2021.
    1. $72 for youth members in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts,
    2. $45 for youth members in Exploring, and
    3. $45 for adult members
    4. $75 for unit charter fees
  2. A new background check authorization must be completed by all adult members and submitted with the recharter.

Important update affecting all registered members during the upcoming recharter cycle:

All registered adult leaders must review the Background Check Disclosure and complete the BSA's Background Check Authorization. These authorization forms must be submitted with each unit’s recharter this December. No recharters will be able to be processed without this signed form from all registered adult leaders that are being renewed for the 2022 calendar year.

We apologize for the inconvenience that these two announcements will place on your unit and its leadership while you continue to provide a life-changing Scouting program to the youth of North West and North Central Oklahoma.
