Basic Training
|
| To become a "Trained" leader you must
participate in at least three levels of
basic training: Fast Start
(A video that you watch), New Leader
Essentials, and Leader
Specific Training. Some adult
leadership positions also require an Outdoor
Skills course before the person is
considered to be fully trained. Fast Start
is typically viewed at the unit level.
There are Fast Start training videos for
each leadership position in Scouting. You
can view these right here on this website,
or you can obtain the DVD or VHS Video from
the Council Service Center in Enid, or your
own Cub Scout Pack may even have a copy.
New Leader Essentials requires approximately
1.5 hours of your time. It is an
introductory session that highlights the
values, aims, history, and methods of
Scouting. It addresses how these aims and
methods are reached in an age appropriate
style within Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and
Venturing. We offer this training several
times a year at our Sundance Training Center
and it is often offered in each of our
Scouting Districts.
Leader Specific training
provides the specialized knowledge required
to assume a leadership role. Because each
course is designed for a specific leadership
position, the training time varies. The time
requirements are as follows: |
Cub Scouts Leaders
|
(Tiger Cub Den Leaders, Den Leaders,
Webelos Den Leaders, Pack Committee
Members, Assistant Cubmasters and
Cubmasters) two and a half to three
hours.

Boy Scout Troop
Committee Members - three hours
|
Boy Scout
Scoutmasters - 3 two and
a half hour sessions
|
Boy Scout Assistant
Scoutmasters - 3 two and a half
hour sessions
|
In addition to
Leader Specific training, Assistant
Scoutmasters and Scoutmasters are
required to take Introduction to Outdoor
Leader Skills to be considered
"Trained". Introduction to Outdoor
Leader Skills requires 1.5 days,
typically a weekend. The skills taught
are based on the outdoor skills found in
The Boy Scout Handbook. The course is
also ideal for Venturing leaders because
it focuses on skills that build
confidence and competence in leaders
conducting outdoor camping experiences.
We usually offer the Introduction to
Outdoor Leader Skills course twice a
year at our Sundance Training Center.

| If you change positions or are
registered in multiple positions you must
complete the training for each position. New
Leader Essentials needs to only be taken
once while you are in Scouting. But if you
move positions or are dual registered as a
Cub Scout Den Leader and an Assistant
Scoutmaster (for example) you must complete
two Fast Starts, and two Leader Specific
training's to be considered "Trained". If
next year you register as a Webelos Den
Leader, you must view Webelos Den Leader
Fast Start and complete Webelos Den Leader
Specific to be considered "Trained" even if
you had earlier taken a different course
such as the Tiger Den Leader Specific
Training Course. |
Supplemental Training
|
| The Boy Scouts of America and the
Cimarron Council offer other training
opportunities for you. Supplemental training
courses, such as those offered at the
Philmont Training Center, provide in-depth
skills training on a variety of topics.
These training opportunities equip leaders
with the tools to face specific obstacles
within their unit. If you take on the job
of helping us run a Day Camp, the Council
will send you to several Days of National
Camp School - a simply awesome training that
will also help you in your Scout Unit. From
time to time we offer other training courses
in Cimarron Council like "Ideal Year of
Scouting" and other courses. |
Advanced Training
|
| Advanced training includes Wood
Badge, the highest-level adult
leadership course offered by the Boy Scouts
of America. Fast Start and Basic Training (a
"Trained" leader) in your registered
leadership position are required for any
adult leader to become eligible to attend
Wood Badge. Other Advanced Training
courses, such as Powderhorn, etc. are
announced when they become available. |
